Its no surprise that wedding cakes can be extremely expensive; in fact, everything with the word wedding attached to it seems to be fairly pricey these days! But what exactly are you paying for? Here is a little insight on why these fabulous cakes are worth every penny.
It’s common for brides to think about the price of their dream wedding cake and decide to make their own. After all, comparing the cost of making a wedding cake and purchasing one is like apples and oranges! But what these hopeful brides don’t consider is the time and skill that it takes to give a plain ol’cake that amazing Wedding Glow. For the most part, baking a cake is a routine for pasty chiefs; however, constructing a cake based on someones unique specifications is where the effort really steps in. Wedding cakes need to be carefully molded both in weight and size to ensure that they can handle the decorating style requested. Most wedding cake designs require a well thought out construction and details done only by hand. Remember that a cake is like a painting in that every layor of decoration added will effect the layers below and above it. This rule of decorating can be hard to work under considering that pastry chiefs have very little room for error.

Most cakes from a wedding vendor are made to order within 2 days of the ceremony with little time to spare. Although a wedding cake can be costly there are a few ways to minimize the bill. You can start by asking your baker what decorating skills he or she are especially good at. Often bakers will give you a deal on a cake if they are familiar with your design and are able to complete the decorating quicker then if a less familiar style was chosen. Finally, find a large bakery to work with. Large baking companies specializing in wedding cakes utilize an entire team to complete your cake as opposed to just having one person complete the task. This usually means more skilled pastry chiefs and a lower overall cost.
