Wedding flowers are a beautiful and essential part of any wedding; which is why many brides decide to preserve them.  A very popular method to preserving your wedding flowers is by using a chemical found at any local craft or home supply store called “Silica Gel”.  Silica Gel is actually a granular liquid that has the ability to absorb moister from flowers.  By using Silica Gel and following these 7 easy steps, you’ll be able to cherish your wedding flowers forever!

  1. Clean your flowers by trimming off any excess leaves or stems that you don’t wish to preserve
  2. Lay your flowers one by one in a deep container with an airtight lid making sure they don’t touch, and poor 1 inch of Silica Gel into the container.
    * TIP : Keep alike flowers in the same container - since they will take the same amount of time to dry
  3. Pour more Silica Gel around the wedding flowers. Use your finger to mound the gel over each bloom and close each container tightly.
  4. Place the containers in a cool, dry place and let them sit untethered for 3 days.  Larger flowers can take up to a week to fully process.
  5. When the flowers appear to be dry and stiff carefully take them out of the silica gel.
  6. By using a thin pliable wire, attach the stems together in whatever assortment you wish.
    * TIP : Look at some old wedding pictures to help you re-arrange your flowers the way they were on your wedding day.
  7. Spray your preserved wedding flower arrangements with either a “dried flower spray” (found at any craft store) or hair spray.  Adding this final spray will help permanently bond the Silica Gel to your beautiful flowers.
