Introduction to Indian Weddings

in Wedding Traditions

India is full of many cultures and different religions.  Despite the differences, most Indian weddings posses a certain ritual like ceremony.  Because of natural migration and modernization, traditional Indian weddings have changed greatly over time.  However, all Indian wedding ceremonies still involve some type of blessing from an elder in the family.  To this day, the parents of the bride and groom have always played an important role in every Indian Wedding event.

What an Indian bride wears on her special day is based on the region of the country she lives in.  Mashrashtrian brides are known to wear a navarri or a yellow sari for their wedding in addition to several hair accessories.  A Punjabi bride however, will wear a specially made salwar kameez and a dupatta that is pinned over her head.  For Indian brides getting married in the northern part of the country, it is customary to be covered in alta (red colored pigment) on her hands and feet.  Similarly, the mehendi or henna tattoo is commonly seen in Indian Brides that are either Hindu or Muslim.

Wedding Flowers also play a part in Indian Weddings. During an Indian Wedding Ceremony an exchange of floral garlands is made between the bride and the groom.  Additionally, black beads dipped in gold are used to signify the mangalsutra which the groom wraps around the neck of his bride.  The sindoor or adornment of vermilion is another symbol of marriage in Indian culture.  It is written on the forehead of the bride and groom during the ceremony. Most Indian wedding ceremonies also involve the wedding couple circling a holy fire with seven pheras.  This customary piece of the ceremony represents the bride and groom’s seven future lives in matrimony.

Indian Weddings are also about making their guests feel comfortable.  The entire event is usually involves several arrangements all of which made to accommodate the guests of the wedding.  The food served at an Indian Wedding also varies depending on the state.  The wedding cuisine is commonly made of a large selection of cooked, roasted and fried entrees.  There is almost always a large choice  of sweet dishes to choose from like rabdi, rasgollas or payas.  Weddings in the southern part of India incorporate a large selection of plantain leaves and is entirely served as a five course meal.  On the other hand, North Indian wedding food tends to be more rich in taste and the native food pure ghee, is always shared by all.
