How To Choose the Best Photographer for your Wedding

Last year a close friend got married in an outdoor wedding in Miami Florida. The garden where they got married was full of beautiful flowers, breath taking decor and romantic lighting. Every inch of the space was picture perfect!  A few weeks later when my girlfriend sent some photos from the wedding, I noticed that the majority of the pictures had the same background!  It was such a shame that the photographer only stuck to 3 or 4 backdrops when the entire space was drop dead gorgeous!
Unfortunately, this is not the first time I’ve seen this happen.  I can’t stress enough how important it is for a Bride to be knowledgeable about How to chose her wedding photographer. So to help all those brides out there, I’ve gathered 3 expert tips from the best wedding photographers I’ve ever worked with. Enjoy!

# 1 You can’t replace the Sun

On the wedding day, the bride and groom should schedule some “private time” with their photographer - 20 minutes at the least and away from all their excited family and friends.  Being away from all the screaming and crying really helps in achieving that intimate candid picture.  Photos taken in natural lighting will always look much softer and more elegant.  If it all possible, plan for your ceremony to finish about two hours before sunset.  The natural light during sunset is so romantic. Nothing can mimic the warm tones and afterglow of a setting sun.  Don’t forget, days are longer in the summer and shorter in the winter!!

#2 “Click” with your Photographer

Keep in mind that you will be spending more time with your wedding photographer then any other wedding vendor.  Make sure that you you feel comfortable with the person and that you “click” well with him or her.  Aside from your actual wedding day, you will be with your photographer during your engagement shoot, when you first receive the image proofs and again when you start the album design process.  You will spend anywhere from 20-25 total hours with your wedding photographer through out the entire experience.

#3 Communication is the Key

It’s hard for any photographer to ever know what the wedding couple is expecting so be sure to always communicate what you want.  If you don’t have a specific look or theme in mind, let your photographer know.  He or she should be able to offer great examples and ideas to help you pinpoint an overall style. Likewise, let your photographer know exactly what shots you expect to have taken.  Do you really want a shot of the entire wedding party?  Are you expecting several pictures of just the bridesmaids?  Answer these types of questions before your big day.  Remember the more information and planning a photographer has the better your photos will look!
